Architect in the House

From 1999 to 2013, during Architecture Week, the Royal Institute of British Architects in association with the charity Shelter, promoted a scheme to encourage Clients to participate in a one hour consultation in their home, or office, in exchange for a minimum donation to Shelter.

The RIBA co-ordinated the public's response and referred applicants to a participating Practice, ideally within five miles of their home or office. All RIBA members who participated in the scheme were RIBA Chartered Practices. We are such a Practice and we participated for fifteen years. Each year we undertook a considerable number of visits.

Between 1999 and 2013 we visited over 500 homes between Guisborough & Berwick. In doing so we have so far raised over £20,700. Examples of the projects we have visited and the matters discussed can be seen in the adjoining lists of photographs. Following such consultations between 1999 and 2013 we undertook a considerable number of the projects, ranging in value from £7,000 to £900,000. Indeed, many of the projects depicted on this website began with a visit under the Scheme.

Sadly in 2014, the RIBA decided to discontinue the Scheme. However, JPA have continued to run the Architect in the House scheme since 2014. We are always happy to meet prospective Clients for a preliminary meeting, without obligation.

We invited The Save the Children Fund to be the beneficiary of the donations in 2014. We are now also supporting the Tynedale Hospice at Home Charity, which provides end-of-life care and support to patients in the local Northumberland area.
