Almshouses, Barnard Castle
Working for a Charitable Trust, under instruction by Managing Agents George F White LLP, the first step was to undertake a Quinquennial Inspection of almshouses owned by the Trust, and then to prepare a Schedule of Works for upgrading to improve thermal performance, and to deal with other matters recorded by the Inspection, including possible subsidence, and drainage defects. The Works were largely funded by an HCA grant delivered via the Almshouse Consortium.
The Works included thermal insulation to all external walls; new electric heating throughout; upgrading insulation to lofts; the provision of new double-glazed windows, and new external doors; new wetrooms; the enlargement and replacement of Kitchens; and, replacement of all floor coverings, and decoration. Externally, paths were re-laid and new ramps provided allowing Residents free movement around the gardens.
We provided architectural services from inception to completion, including the provision of Contract Administration, and Principal Designer services as required by the CDM Regulations. The Works were completed in Sections so allowing for the transfer of three existing residents from their existing cottages to newly refurbished properties.
